Our company is the result of a passion for rowing and a desire to help teams be Always Oarsome!
Founded by Gill Laidlaw and Jen Hinds, Always Oarsome combines successful business strategy with the ultimate team sport of rowing. And we think you’ll love it!
Together we have years of experience in business, team-building and training and we can’t wait to get to know you.
Here’s a bit more about us in the meantime!
“Mum, I’ve joined the rowing club!”, my 13 year old daughter shouted as she threw her school bags on the hall floor after a gruelling day in the classroom. My first thought was “Good Lord! Another new sports kit to buy!” To be honest, my daughter was not a particularly talented sports person although she was a trier. She loved rowing from the very first session and after a few initial knock backs, she soldiered on and quite frankly was brilliant. (But I’m her mum so I would say that!)
You could say she was my inspiration. After spending hour upon hour on the river bank watching and supporting her, myself and a group of mums decided to have a go.
That was twelve years ago when I was working as a primary school teacher. My passion for rowing inspired me to become more involved with the club.
I became Ladies Vice Captain at Warrington Rowing Club for three years, and also took on roles such as Social Sec, Membership Sec and Kit Monitor.
An enthusiastic, committed member of the Ladies Race squad, I train four or five times a week and help to deliver the best Learn 2 Row course in the North West (it must be true – Jen said!)
I recently stepped down from being a director of a local, thriving dental practice where I spent fifteen years helping the business to grow and develop into a forward thinking, innovative and award winning practice.
With my children away at university, I enjoy listening and watching new music talent with my husband Gavin (my fave at the moment being The K’s!) and walking my two border collies.
I decided a career incorporating my experience in teaching and my passion for rowing was the way forward and, to be honest, I haven’t looked back!.
Over the past few years, I have become a qualified safety launch drive and a BRitish Rowing coach. This has helped with the running of the LEarn to Row programme at Warrington Rowing Club and also enabled me to support Warrington Youth Rowing as a coach.
I spend most of my days talking about, thinking about, coaching or actually rowing! What’s not to like?
My most fulfilling moment is teaching Jen to learn to row!!!!!
Gill is Always Oarsome! Naturally.
CATCHES AND FINISHES…
Apple / Android? Apple – it’s one of my five a day!
Digital / Paper? Call me old fashioned, but you know where you are with a piece of paper!
Bow side / Stroke side? Either – I’m always up for a challenge!
Jelly babies / Jaffa cakes? Would it be rude to eat both??
Awesome / Oarsome? Errr hello? We’re Always Oarsome!
PEOPLE WHO HAVE ATTENDED GILL’S ROWING LESSONS IN THE PAST HAVE SAID: “Brilliant fun! Thanks for being so patient!” “Loved the course! Can’t wait to start competing!” “Had a brilliant time. Told all my friends about it!”
Until 5 years ago, I had never considered rowing. (Have you seen how those athletes look at the end of a race? Surely that’s neither fun nor good for you?!).
But thanks to a chat at a networking event, I signed up for a Learn to Row course at Warrington Rowing Club, which was run by Always Oarsome Gill.
From the moment I nervously stepped into the long and narrow rowing boat, I was totally hooked!
My love of the sport led me to take my coaching qualification with British Rowing, join Gill in running the learn to row programme at Warrington Rowing Club, become an assistant coach for Warrington Youth Rowing (an amazing charity which introduces young people, who otherwise would never have the opportunity, to rowing), and, last but best, to create Always Oarsome with Gill.
Continuing to follow in Gill’s footsteps, I am currently vice captain of the Ladies Competitive Squad at Warrington Rowing Club. And, like Gill, an active and committed squad member training four or five times a week and competing as much as possible!
With a background in marketing and communications, I have had my own business for almost 20 years, but nothing has been as fulfilling as introducing people to rowing and the vast benefits that it gives.
A former foster carer, I am now a carer for vulnerable adults and as such have undergone extensive training in mental health and conditions such as autism, and am passionate about helping people, irrespective of their background and circumstance, get the most from life.
The Regional Leader and Network Driver for one of the UK’s leading business networks (4Networking), I support and trains 20 teams across the North West as well as the team of National Leaders across the U.K.
As a business owner and carer, life can get very hectic and stressful. Rowing enables me to maintain my mental and physical wellbeing so that I can carry out all my other roles to a far higher standard than I otherwise would.
Nothing compares to watching your day-to-day worries fade into the distance as you push off the landing stage. Being outdoors, in beautiful surroundings, feeling the flow of the water, hearing the boat sing (it really does!) WOW! It’s simply amazing!
Most life changing moment? Being taught how to row by Gill!! 😊
Jen is Always Oarsome! Probably, sometimes.
CATCHES AND FINISHES…
Apple / Android? I love my iPhone so much, I could just lick it! Is that weird?
Digital / Paper? Come on – everybody does digital these days… don’t they??
Sweep / Scull? Scull! Two is always better than one!
Jelly babies / Jaffa Cakes? I’d rather have crisps and cheese but if pushed I say Jaffa Cakes.
Awesome / Oarsome? I can’t believe you even asked that! It’s ALWAYS Oarsome!
PEOPLE WHO HAVE ATTENDED JEN’S WORKSHOPS IN THE PAST HAVE SAID: “Very engaging” “Where did the time go? Today was a day very well spent!” “Fabulous, friendly, engaging. Very likeable!” “Lively, enthusiastic and clear delivery. Very knowledgeable.” “Enjoyed the workshop, could listen to Jen all day”
